Au Pair: who and what.

I am sure you have heard of the word au pair. Who or what is an au pair? Well, according to the Webster’s dictionary, an au pair is usually a young foreign person who cares for children and helps with light housework for a family in return for room and board and the opportunity to learn the family’s language (therein referred to as the host family)

An au pair program is a cultural exchange program that allows young people from all over the world to travel to other countries to live with a host family in exchange for childcare services. The word ‘au pair’ is French meaning “on par” or “on equal terms.” The arrangement between the host family and the au pair differs depending on which country the host family resides in. For instance, In Europe au pairs work part-time with the children of the host family and they study part-time. As an au pair, you take on a role as a member of the family and help your host family with childcare and light housework. In return, you receive free room and board plus pocket money. Through the Au Pair program, au pairs and host families take part in a mutually rewarding cultural exchange opportunity. Au pairs can continue their education while experiencing everyday life with a host family, and host families receive reliable and responsible childcare from au pairs who become part of the family.
