Once a decision has been made to study abroad, one requirement must be met: A language proficiency test. Most people wonder why they should take a language proficiency test considering that they have been using English their entire lives. However, English is considered a second language here In Kenya so if you want to study, work or live in an English Speaking country, you would be required by many employers and programs to have proof of English proficiency such as the TOEFL from ETS, The PTE from Pearson or, The IELTS by the British Council are widely-accepted English tests.

What is TOEFL?
The acronym TOEFL stands for Test of English as a Foreign Language the main purpose of this exam is to measure your ability to understand and communicate in English at the university level. It tests how well your reading, listening, speaking, and writing are suited for academic tasks academic tasks. TOEFL is an Internet-Based Test (IBT) that is fully administered on a computer through the Internet.

The TOEFL test is administered by the Education Testing System Educational Testing Service (ETS), which is the world’s largest private educational testing and assessment organization. ETS develops various standardized tests including the TOEFL, TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication), Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General and Subject Tests,
Who is the TOEFL Test designed for?
TOEFL is mainly aimed at testing academic English abilities. The largest percentage of TOEFL Test takers is made up of International students intending to take up further studies abroad in English-speaking countries. The TOEFL test is administered about three times a month.
It is recommended to book the test early to avoid missing out on application deadlines and to also give yourself enough time for test preparation before taking the exam. It’s important to note that registration closes 7 days before the test date. If you miss out on the registration deadline, you can register late, up to 4 days before the test date but you will be required to pay a late fee of up to $40.
What is tested on the TOEFL test?
TOEFL tests 4 English language skills which are Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing) which now takes a little under 2 hours.
TOEFL Exam Pattern 2024
The TOEFL tests competencies in the 4 key areas of English language & exam pattern is mainly divided into 4 sections: Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing.
The overall TOEFL score range is 0 to 120, and the score range for each individual exam section is 0 to 30.

It is wise to practice typing on QWERTY keyboard before taking the test as during the TOEFL Exam, the Standard English language (QWERTY) computer keyboard is used
How is the TOEFL scored?
For the TOEFL iBT test you will receive 4 scaled section scores and a total score:

How long does it take for TOEFL scores release?
The scores are released 5 days after the test and are valid for 2 years after the test date. There’s no limit to the number of times you can take the test. However, you cannot take it more than once in a 12-day period.
How can I best prepare for the TOEFL® test?
The TOEFL like any other test, calls for lots of practice and preparation so as to achieve a great score. Taking the test when you are not well prepared is like shooting yourself on the foot.
